北京大学中国经济研究中心联合创始人之一，国家发展研究院教授，曾任北京大学副校长。海闻教授1982年毕业于北京大学经济系，获经济学学士。1983年毕业于美国长滩加州州立大学，获经济学 硕士学位。1991年毕业于美国戴维斯加州大学经济系，获经济学硕士和博士学位。海闻教授的主要教学及研究领域为国际经济学（贸易与金融）、发展经济学和转型经济学。主要研究领域为国际贸易、发展经济学等。1993年，他的《国际贸 易：理论、政策、实践》 著述中有关国际贸易的政策分析和构想引起海内外经济学者和企业家的兴趣，也获得到了国家经贸决策部门的关注。其后，他和经济学家林双林合写的《管理中的经 济学》，由他主编的《转轨中的俄罗斯经济》《中国乡镇企业研究》等学术著作对中国经济运行的提示和分析受到高层领导的夸奖。他已在American Economic Review等国内外杂志上发表相关论文多篇，如今海闻教授的学术研究成果已经成为中国经济发展的最重要的参考文献之一。海闻教授无疑是我国经济发展和社会变革进程中一个重量级的人物，2005年，曾有媒体这样评论海闻：“他归 国10年，以极具个性的思考激活了中国经济精英的学术话语， 给中国经济研究带来清新的空气，拓宽了中国经济发展的思路。他对中国经济核心症结的解剖和研究，影响了中国改革开放的进程。”
