Visiting Scholars Program

China Center for Economic Research

National School of Development, Peking University

The China Center for Economic Research (“CCER”) is a research networking branch of the National School of Development (“NSD”) at Peking University. In order to enhance academic networks between CCER and other domestic and international academic institutions, and to enhance China's research competence in economics and management science, CCER establishes the "Visiting Scholars Program" that hosts visiting scholars from all fields of economics and management science.

(1)Qualification of the Applicant:

The applicant is required to hold a doctoral degree and be employed by a reputable university or research institution in China or abroad. Applicants who have significant domestic or international influence can be admitted with moderately lower standards. To apply, applicants should send their application materials including a cover letter, a statement of research and a CV to Ms. Xiaowen HU at xwhu@nsd.pku.edu.cn. The Academic Committee of NSD will review and make offers for the successful applicants in three months after the application materials are received.

(2)Duration and Compensation Packages:

Visiting scholars can apply for a visit lasting from one month to one year. Extension is possible for some cases. Visiting scholars will enjoy the package provided by Peking University for visiting scholars. CCER will provide the visiting scholar a round-trip economy-class ticket between his/her home city and Beijing, along with the following living allowances:

  • Regular visiting scholars: the package is identical to the one provided to faculty members of equivalent qualifications at NSD. Basic monthly salary: 27,800 RMB for lecturer (assistant researcher), 32,200 RMB for associate professor (associate researcher), 40,000 RMB for professor (researcher).
  • Sabbatical visiting scholars: 20,000 RMB for monthly accommodation and living expenses.

For particularly outstanding visiting scholars, the benefits can be appropriately increased. Visiting scholars can also apply to teach courses.  Currently, NSD pays 20,000 RMB per academic credit.

a) Visiting scholars who stay less than one month (inclusion) are required to conduct at least one academic seminar. Visiting scholars who stay more than one month but less than six months (inclusion) need to provide a paper for the CCER Working Paper Series. Visiting scholars who stay more than six months but less than one year (inclusion) need to offer two papers for the CCER Working Paper Series. When such papers are published in academic journals, the visiting scholar is required to put CCER as one of his/her affiliations in the format “### University (the author’s home institution) and CCER”.

b)During their visit, visiting scholars are considered as full-time faculty members at NSD and shall participate all academic activities held by CCER and NSD, and shall engage in NSD’s regular departmental services.
