Smartphone Ecosystem Evolution and Sharing Economy

Abstract：

This talk will mainly covers two parts: firstly, the smartphone industry and its value chain evolution; secondly, how the smartphone ecosystem has implication to the sharing economy.

Specifically, the first part of this talk explores the evolutionary journey of value chain with four sequential stages namely vertical integrated, horizontal coordinated, globally specialized and virtually ecosystem based. We have used the 15 years longitudinal case studies of global mobile phone industry to see its transformation from analog phone, feature phone and towards smartphone and their ecosystems. This part contributes to value chain theories by exploring business ecosystems as a new pattern of value chain. Besides, this study also finds the dynamic mechanisms driving such transformation process.

The second part will discuss the how the smartphone platform and ecosystem implicate to the sharing economy. This part will specifically explore the business model and business ecosystem interaction in the Sharing Economy.


嘉宾简介：

Ke RONG is a senior lecturer at the University of Exeter Business School and a visiting faculty at the Harvard Business School in USA. Ke was awarded the PhD degree by University of Cambridge in 2012 and the Bachelor degree in Tsinghua University of China in 2007. His research interests include Business/Innovation Ecosystems, Data Driven Ecosystem, and Platform Market and Network Effects in Sharing Economy. His research has been published in International Journal of Production Economics, Journal of International Management, Group and Organization Management and Expert System with Applications. Currently he is co-editing a special issue in Academy of Management Discoveries titled as ‘Business Models, Ecosystems and Society in the Sharing Economy’.
