Threat or Opportunity? The Politically Contingent Impact of Institutional Deterioration on Entrepreneurial Investment

Abstract：

Rather than assuming a unitary impact of institutions on entrepreneurship, we propose a politically contingent view toward the relation between institutions and entrepreneurship by drawing on insights from the literature of political markets and political connections. Our empirical work on China’s entrepreneurs, which strongly supports this proposition, shows specifically that the impact of institutional deterioration on entrepreneurial reinvestment substantially hinges on entrepreneurs’ political connections. That is, institutional deterioration is not universally perceived as a threat that undermines entrepreneurial reinvestment activity; rather, when entrepreneurs have political connections that can endow greater advantages under weak institutions, institutional deterioration could likely be perceived as an opportunity that promotes entrepreneurs’ reinvestment.

葛建华，中国人民大学商学院组织与人力资源系助理教授，于2015年毕业于北卡罗莱纳大学夏洛特分校并获组织科学博士学位。他的研究兴趣包括组织理论、制度理论、社会网络与经济社会学，在Journal of World Business, Research in Social Stratification and Mobility, 《南开管理评论》等国内外学术期刊上发表多篇论文，并曾获AOM最佳会议论文、SASE最佳研究生论文等。
