题  目:Son Preference, Fast Economic Growth, and Living Arrangements: Evidence from Rural China

摘  要:This paper studies intergenerational living arrangements in the presence of preschool children. We consider two particular driving forces behind living arrangements: labor specialization in childcare and work on the job; and sharing the companionship of children as a household public good. Using China Health and Nutrition Survey data, we find that women are more likely to co-reside with their mothers-in-law if they have higher earning abilities or if they have firstborn sons, who are considered more valuable household public goods under the widespread son preference in China. These findings can be well explained by our model, which also yields testable implications for the interplay of the two channels. In addition, we provide supplementary evidence on maternal labor supply and gender disparity in health insurance and medical services. The evidence is consistent with our hypothesis on the determinants of extended-family arrangements.
