内容提要:

At the environmental tipping point, any increase in the stock level of pollutants might lead to catastrophe; recently, there have been increasing signs of unsustainable development due to intensive human activities; meanwhile, innovation activities are increasingly costly, making it difficult to develop technologies crucial for sustainable development. We show that, in the presence of the high cost of innovation, economic growth might stagnate at the tipping point. Nevertheless, mitigating environmental problems during a period of stagnation may prevent catastrophe. Moreover, sustainability will be higher if governmental interventions divert resources from pursuing contemporary growth to intergenerational equity.
