“
Understanding the Unequal Post-Great Recession Wealth Recovery for American Families
"
Abstract:
U.S. families lost significant amount of wealth during the Great Recession. Six years after,
household level
data show that family wealth has not returned to the pre-recession level.
Who are falling behind and what drives the slow and uneven recovery? Both descriptive results and regressions controlling for life-cycle wealth accumulation show that black and Hispanic families are particularly falling behind in wealth accumulation, partly due to a wealth portfolio concentrated in housing prior to recession, together with a slow recovery in housing market. On the other hand, young people are able to recover sooner due to a strong labor market performance, despite that they have lost more during the recession. Oaxaca decomposition suggests the importance role of homeownership and earnings in explaining the rising racial wealth gap in the past two decades.
