Abstract

Although inspiration has been commonly regarded as a driver for creative activity or personal growth, research on how inspiration affects decision making is very limited (Thrash et al. 2014). Following Thrash and Elliot (2003, 2004)’s tripartite conceptualization of inspiration (evocation, motivation, and transcendence), we argued that inspiration activates people’s desire for status, which leads to status-enhancing behaviors in social contexts. Across six lab studies, we found that inspired individuals are more willing to express opinions that are at odds with the majority’s than individuals who experience other positive emotions (e.g., amusement, hopefulness). In addition, both perceived status and physical state (e.g., unrestricted, constrained) increase after inspired (vs. amused) individuals express minority opinions. Attitude certainty and uniqueness seeking are ruled out as alternative explanations.
