题目：Only Time Can Tell: A Model of Cultural Products and their Temporal Quality*

摘要：

We study a Melitz-style model of cultural products such as literature, popular music, motion pictures, and fashion. For these products, the main dimension of quality is their temporal quality, which only time can tell. When producers scale down their investments in temporal quality, their blueprints are less able to stand the test of time, necessitating their replacement by even newer blueprints, generating a possible illusion of vibrant creative activities. Recent technological changes that vastly reduce promotion and distribution costs would lower temporal quality of popular music in the long run. Holding fixed creation and promotion costs, producers’ equilibrium investments in temporal quality are not a_ected by international trade in a large class of trade models. Finally, fashion producers with lower temporal-quality investment costs are also more likely to offshore their production.

主讲人简介：

Kim-Sau Chung is the Professor at Hong Kong Baptist University. He received his PhD from University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1999. He has fruitful publications including “Role Models and Arguments for Affirmative Action.” at AER as single author, and others at RES, JDE and Econometrica.
