Abstract

How does the health cost of air pollution in China compare to the health benefits of income growth? Using each city's historical concentration of industries, nationwide industry-specific growth in trade following China's entry into the WTO, and nationwide industry-specific pollution intensity, we construct two shocks --an income shock and an air pollution shock-- and use them together as exogenous sources of income growth and air pollution. We find that income growth and air pollution affect different dimensions of health. Air pollution significantly increases the probability of hypertension and overweight, while income growth significantly improves almost every other health outcomes. We also find that export growth can cause air pollution in cities up to 400 km away from the source city.
