Better Late Than Never? Corporate Social Responsibility Engagement After Product-harm Crisis

Abstract
We investigate whether corporate social responsibility (CSR), captured by firm donation, is used to mitigate the adverse effects of product-harm crises. Using a difference-in-differences design, we find a significant increase in post-crisis CSR engagement for firms involved in product-harm crises. Furthermore, the positive relationship between CSR engagement and product-harm crisis is more pronounced for non-state-owned enterprises and firms with a more scattered customer base. Additionally, we find that increasing post-crisis CSR activities helps troubled firms enhance their customer and supplier relationships. We offer a unique perspective illuminating the use of CSR in product marketplaces and extend the literature on the spillover effect of CSR and crisis management.

张敏，中国人民大学商学院副教授，博士生导师，会计系副主任，中国人民大学“杰出青年学者”。主要研究领域为审计、税、家族企业与公司财务。目前已经在“Journal of Corporate Finance (SSCI)”、 “The International Journal of Accounting”、“Journal of Business Ethics (SSCI)”、“Pacific-Basin Finance Journal (SSCI)”、“Corporate Governance: An International Review (SSCI)”、“The North American Journal of Economics and Finance (SSCI)”、《经济研究》、《管理世界》、《世界经济》、《金融研究》、《会计研究》、《审计研究》等国内外核心期刊发表论文五十余篇，出版著作两部。担任《经济研究》、《管理世界》、《世界经济》、《金融研究》、《会计研究》、《南方经济》、《南开管理评论》、“Journal of Business Ethics”、“Asia-Pacific Journal of Accounting and Economics”、“The North American Journal of Economics and Finance”、“China Economic Review ”、“Managerial Auditing Journal”、“China Finance Review International ”等核心期刊匿名审稿人。主持国家自然科学基金项目两项；主持教育部人文社科项目、中国博士后特别资助项目、中国博士后面上资助项目及中国人民大学明德青年学者项目各一项。入选财政部第四届“全国会计（学术类）领军（后备）人才”。曾获得中国人民大学商学院最佳研究生教师奖、中国人民大学教学优秀奖、全国优秀博士论文提名奖、中国人民大学优秀博士论文奖、北京大学优秀博士后等奖励。

Abstract
