Highway Infrastructure and Agricultural Productivity in China (with Zhaoyue Teng)
摘要：
Although there are many researches about the effect of transport infrastructure on the productivity of manufacturing firms, few studies examine how it affects the agricultural production. In this paper, we study the impact of highway access to China’s counties on labor productivity in its agricultural sector. We adopt a difference-in-difference approach to identify the causal relationship, and use historical routes as instrumental variables to address the endogeneity problems caused by the non-random placements of highway. Using the data of Chinese counties and the national trunk highway from 2002 to 2009, we find that highway infrastructure increases agricultural productivity by 5.3%. Further investigations suggest that better transport infrastructure facilitates migration of rural labors to the urban region, which allows higher utilization of mechanical power in agricultural production.
主讲人简介：
Dr. Han Li received his doctoral degree from the University of Houston in 2006. Currently his is a professor of economics and the executive vice dean at the Research Institute of Economics and Management (RIEM), Southwestern University of Finance and Economics(SWUFE). His main research fields are regional economics, urban economics, and applied microeconomics. He has published papers in both English and Chinese peer-reviewed journals. His current research projects include evaluating outcomes of China’s infrastructure investments and other regional policies, as well as various topics on China’s housing market. He also serves as a member of Sichuan Committee of Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.
