摘要：We calibrate a model of human capital and endogenous fertility to match key empirical regularities of the cross country distribution of fertility and schooling. The model predicts a quantity-quality tradeoff similar to the data. We use model to investigate what accounts for the observed international differences in schooling and fertility. According to the model, differences in the availability of public education explains most of the international differences. Wage and mortality differentials also account for a substantial fraction of the dispersion, with differences in adult mortality playing a more central role than differences in infant and adolescent mortality.
