题目:Inequality and House Prices

摘要:This paper studies the interaction between inequality and house prices using an incomplete market model with heterogeneous households. The model links cross-sectional household portfolio saving decisions to housing market outcomes, and it can account for the positive empirical relationship between growth in inequality and changes in house prices. It also illustrates a new house price formation mechanism in which an investment motive among the wealthy plays a key role. A quantitative application of the theory rationalizes the recent substantial housing boom accompanied by rising household saving rates in China. The theory in this paper shows that market frictions can have a differential impact cross-sectionally, increasing inequality. Inequality can in turn amplify frictions in the market.

主讲人简介:张福栋,清华大学五道口金融学院助理教授。于2010年获中央财经大学经济学和数学双学士学位,之后于2016年毕业于美国密歇根大学,取得经济学博士学位。主要研究方向是宏观经济学和国际经济学,包括不平等的宏观原因和影响、财政政策、房地产、主权违约、偏好的量化度量、中国经济等。
