Sino-Japanese Relationship and the Survival of Japanese subsidiaries in China Time :March 16, 2017 (Thursday) 10:00am -11:30am Location : Zhifuxuan Conference Room, National School of Development Speaker: Jane Lu, Professor of Management and James Riady Chair in Asian Business and Economics, the University of MelbourneAbstract
Political hazards faced by multinational enterprises may come from not only host country governments but also intergovernmental relations between home and host countries. When the bilateral relation between a home country and a host country worsens, foreign subsidiaries from the home country suffer from increases in expropriation risk and reduction in legitimacy in the host country, which may lead to their exits from the host country. In a sample of 5,248 Japanese subsidiaries in China during 1991-2010, we find that the tension in Sino-Japanese relations enhances the exit rates of Japanese subsidiaries. Our results also show that Japanese subsidiaries could reduce such hazards by modulating their Japanese identity, seeking asylum from regional governments which have official ties to Japan or leveraging parent firms’ local experience. Our findings point to an understudied source of political hazards and reveal strategies which foreign subsidiaries could employ to reduce such hazards.
