CCER Saddened Over Losing Professor D. Gale Johnson

D. Gale Johnson, honorary professor and member of Academic Advisory Council of the China Center for Economic Research (CCER) of Peking University, professor emeritus of economics at the University of Chicago, died of illness in Amherst, Massachusetts at U.S. Eastern time 8:45 p.m. on Sunday, April 13, Beijing time 8:45 a.m. on Monday, April 14. He was 86 years old.
Professor Johnson held a long and distinguished professional career. Among his many positions were president of American Economic Association, and provost, dean of the Social Science Division, chairman of the economics department, and director of the Center for East Asian Studies of the University of Chicago. Since 1980, he made numerous visits to China and maintained a keen interest in the Chinese economy. He was instrumental in the creation of CCER and was one of our greatest supporters.
Professor Johnson was the beloved teacher and mentor of a few CCER faculty members during and after their studies at the University of Chicago. Over the years he developed deep and caring relationships with many CCER faculty and students. He is missed by all faculty and students of CCER.
