摘要:The impact of maternal education on child’s health has long been discussed by economists. A series of natural experiments have been exploited to separate the effect of nurture from nature. In this work, using the variations of exposure to China’s compulsory schooling law, we find a novel channel of this impact. Female education enables them to avoid teen pregnancy, which endures high risk of adverse birth outcomes. Moreover, female education improves the awareness and conduction of prenatal check-ups: We find female education significantly raises the likelihood of induced abortion following a prenatal-check-ups, which generally includes blood tests and abnormal row B ultrasound. This pattern is more obvious in regions with high birth defects rate. Our findings suggest women’s education enables them to select to get pregnant during the time window of lower risk and select against the abnormal embryos through prenatal check-ups and induced abortions. These findings show that maternal schooling could affect child health from this third channel other than nature or nurture.

摘要:Under skill-biased technical change, jobs are becoming less physically demanding whereas they require increasing cognitive abilities. However, existing studies on retirement do not distinguish the different roles of physical and cognitive health. This paper proposes and estimates a dynamic structural model of retirement and savings, allowing the retirement effects of physical and cognitive health to be occupation-dependent. The model is estimated on the U.S. Health and Retirement Study data by Indirect Inference. The counterfactual experiments suggest ignoring the cognitive dimension would underestimate the retirement effect of health by 50% for clerical workers. Out of the four underlying channels: disutility of working, wages, medical expenditure, and mortality, disutility of working is found the main one through which physical and cognitive health affect retirement. Finally, if the full retirement age were to increase to 70, we would find a larger response in delaying retirement and a larger welfare loss in manual and
clerical occupations.
