Abstract:

We examine the impact of managerial political connections on corporate donation in China, where the institutional infrastructure for corporate social responsibility is underdeveloped and government is an important initiator of corporate donation. We distinguish two types of managerial political connections and argue that managerial political connections can either facilitate external claims or act as a buffer against them contingent upon contextual institutional factors. We test our framework with a panel data of private-controlled listed firms from 2001 to 2006. We find that firms with ascribed bureaucratic connections of executives are more likely to use their connections as a buffer, particularly in competitive industries; while in monopolized industries such connections are more likely to serve as a facilitator. In contrast, achieved political status is more likely to buffer a firm from the pressure for donation in less market-oriented areas; in monopolized industries it also facilitates donation. Our research contributes to the research on the relationship between managerial political connections and firm donations in specific, and sheds fresh light on the link between institutional environment and firms’ strategic use of political connections in transitional economies in general.
