Consuming with Others

Time:April 28th (Thursday) 10:30 -12noon

Location: Zhifuxuan, National School of Development, Peking U.

Speaker: Yanping Tu, Assistant Professor of Marketing, University of Florida

Abstract:

Consumers frequently consume with others, such as eating with family members, watching movies with friends, and so on. How does other people’s consumption influence one’s own experience? Building on research showing that the boundary between self and other is less than clear-cut, and people can experience the self and other as a “we,” I explore the role of the “we” perspective when people consume with others (Tu and Fishbach 2015; JPSP). Specifically, in this talk I will present evidence 1) that people can satiate on other people’s consumption (Tu and Fishbach 2016, under review) and 2) that people can de-satiate through other people’s perspectives (Tu, Yang, and Fishbach 2016, working paper).
