Abstract:
Both internal capabilities and external ties represent important resources for firm innovation. How these resources can be effectively integrated remains an under-examined issue. Based on perspectives of the resource-based view and absorptive capacity, we attempt to address two research questions: (1) given different sources and characteristics of social capital, whether firms demonstrate a hierarchical preference for using these resources; and (2) how various ties can be appropriately integrated to promote innovations according to idiosyncratic internal capabilities. Based on a survey of 1406 Chinese firms, we find both substitutive and complementary effects when firms manage their resource bases. Technological and marketing capabilities as the most critical resources substitute for academic and business ties in innovation. Further, firms with different capabilities selectively take advantage of different ties. Specifically, for firms having higher technological capability, academic ties contribute more significantly to innovation; whereas for firms having higher marketing capability, business ties play a more important role in innovation.

吴蕊教授2001年获得北京大学经济学院经济学学士学位(国际金融专业)、2003年获得加州大学洛杉矶分校经济学硕士学位、2010年获得南加州大学马歇尔商学院工商管理学博士学位。吴蕊教授的主要研究领域包括战略联盟,企业间合作关系,交易成本理论,资源基础论,以及组织学习理论等。吴蕊教授曾在美国生活多年,2004年在世界银行(华盛顿特区总部)任研究分析员。同时她一直是美国管理学学会和战略管理学会的成员和国际会议审稿人。目前为美国管理学学报、战略管理学报等国际知名管理研究协会担任审稿人。
