Consistent with Ruhm (2000), we find that the contemporaneouseconomic booms are bad for health but the relationship is nonlinear. More importantly, although recessions in utero and childhood affect longevity, economic conditions around the time of graduation (from ages 11 to 20) have the largest impact on lifetime mortality. We also find strong evidence that the impacts of economic conditions on mortality are much larger and stronger for those countries with lower government expenditure/GDP rates, suggesting government expenditures can offset the negative effects of economic fluctuations on outcomes.JEL Codes: H51, I10, I38, N10
