题目：The Dark Side of Mating Competition   摘要：Stressful experiences hurt human health. While economists often eulogize the benefits of competition, we investigate the dark side of stressful mating competition in the marriage market. We exploit exogenous variations in mating competition resulted by a powerful large-scale natural experiment in Taiwan. More than one million soldiers and civilians, mostly young males, retreated to Taiwan around 1949 after the Chinese Nationalist Party (Kuomintang) lost in the civil war in China. Initially, the soldiers were not allowed to marry. The ban was then relaxed in 1959, suddenly injecting a large number of bachelors into the local marriage market. Using various data sources, we find that men who underwent a greater mating competition ended up with a higher likelihood of depression and mortality in the long run. On the contrary, women who benefited from the enhanced competition among men tended to have better health and less depression. PKU_9_24_2014.pdf
