题目：Delay Cost, Knowledge Hierarchy, and Wages: Theory and Evidence
摘要：We provide a new approach to study optimal design of knowledge hierarchies under general assumptions. When problem-solving becomes more urgent, employees at each level solve more complex problems and earn more. The organization structure becomes flatter, with fewer layers but a larger span of control at each layer. Moreover, knowledge acquisition is disproportionately concentrated among lower level employees, which results in shrinking intra-firm wage differentials across layers. We find that labor productivity of the firm increases after delay becomes more costly, despite the direct output loss due to greater delay. Using Colombia plant-level data, we find that exporting firms—which face higher delay cost—have fewer layers, larger span of control, and pay higher wages at all levels.
主讲人简介：陈诚博士现为香港大学经济与金融学院助教授。他于2014年在美国普林斯顿大学（Princeton University）获得经济学博士学位。陈诚博士的研究涉及企业组织与管理、跨国公司与外商直接投资和不确定性等领域，曾在国际经济学领域旗舰期刊Journal of International Economics上独立发表论文。
