题目:Gender differentials and cognition in Indonesia

作者:John Strauss

摘要:This paper examines gender differentials in different dimensions of cognition in Indonesia across ages 15 and above. We use the 5 th wave of the Indonesia Family Life Survey, which has a very rich set of cognition test measures, ranging from an adaptive number series test and an abridged Raven’s test, both of which are measures of fluid intelligence; to word recall, to an index of mental intactness formed from a series of questions from the Telephone Interview of Cognitive Status.  As is true in many other settings older women do worse on all of these dimensions of cognition. For younger women, however, this is not necessarily the case. Regression analysis demonstrates that adding controls for schooling levels and then parental schooling, reduces the gender coefficients; for all of the cognition measures. Further adding controls for height, and controls for general health during childhood, almost eliminates the gender differences.
