摘要:Global child poverty persists partly because household-level policies miss unequal resource allocation within families. This paper examines whether empowering women through education can improve child welfare by exploiting China’s Compulsory Education Law as a natural experiment. Using data containing unique information on individual consumption and nutrient intake, we find that an additional year of maternal schooling increases child food expenditure by 9.7% and total expenditure by 12.5%, while reducing child poverty rate by 8.6 percentage points. Maternal education also improves child nutrition and preventive health care. These gains operate through reduced fertility, improved household economic resources, and enhanced maternal bargaining power. However, economic gains translate into better child health primarily in villages with limited food accessibility, where maternal education significantly improves anthropometric outcomes. Our findings highlight that empowering woman through education generates intergenerational impacts by reshaping intrahousehold resource allocation in favor of children.
