题目：How Does Losing Draft Animals Affect Long-Run Human Capital Accumulation?

摘要：

This paper investigates the long-run effects of losing draft animal capital on rural educational outcomes. China’s agricultural collectivization movement instituted advanced production cooperatives (APCs) between 1955 and 1957, leading to a widespread slaughter of draft animals as farmers culled animals rather than surrender them to local APCs. We construct a novel dataset by combining census, household surveys, and hand-coded historical material and demonstrate that those exposed to greater animal loss intensity during their school years acquired more schooling and had better jobs. These perhaps surprising effects stem from decreased returns to farming following the massive slaughter of draft animals, as farming became difficult to manage. The positive effects are most pronounced in areas where agricultural production was heavily dependent on draft animals before the APC, characterized by high per capita arable land and a low level of agricultural mechanization. The positive effects on education also extend to the second generation, showing a stronger association between parents’ and their children’s education. Suggestive evidence indicates that exposed parents placed a higher value on education, rather than material capital, leading them to invest more in children’s human capital.

主讲人介绍：

张俊森，全球杰出的华人经济学家，主要从事劳动经济学、发展经济学及中国经济等领域的研究工作。现为浙江大学经济学院文科资深教授，世界计量经济学会院士，获得第十七届（2016年度）孙冶方经济科学奖以及2020年张培刚发展经济学奖。他目前也是香港中文大学荣休教授，在那他工作了27年后于2021年1月退休。

张俊森教授1983年毕业于浙江大学，1986年获加拿大麦克马斯特大学（McMaster University）经济学硕士学位 （M.A. Economics），1990年获该校经济学博士学位（Ph.D. Economics）。曾任香港中文大学社会科学学院副院长、香港经济学会会长、香港政府中央政策组兼职成员、香港政府策略发展委员会成员等职务。

张俊森教授致力研究犯罪、生育、婚姻、教育、代际支付转移、性别歧视及养老等社会议题所涉及的经济学。他亦专长于与家庭有关的宏观经济学议题，如人口老化、社会保障及经济增长等，其研究广获资助。

张俊森教授在国际知名期刊上发表论文140余篇，其中TOP5的杂志《Journal of Political Economy》发表论文5篇，《Review of Economic Studies》发表论文1篇，其它国际一流杂志发表包括Journal of Labor Economics, Journal of Development Economics、Journal of Public Economics、Journal of International Economics、International Economic Review、Economic Journal、Journal of Human Resource、Review of Economics and Statistics等。2000年在由欧洲经济学与统计学研究中心（ECARES）根据Econlit数据库索引（1994-1998年期间）排名的前1000位经济学家中位列第357，在亚洲位列第5。

张俊森教授目前担任著名学术期刊Journal of Human Resource的共同编辑、多个国际知名期刊的编委，American Economic Review、Journal of Political Economy、Quarterly Journal of Economics等20多个国际高水平学术期刊的匿名审稿人，多个国家研究基金的评审人。
